This Monday for Family Home Evening the kids and I did an activity outside in the sun, and I think it is going to be one that they remember for awhile. I took this idea from my Mom. She demonstrated it to my older brother and sister many years ago and though I don't think I was around to get the visual demonstration I have heard the story and I thought it was a good one. (Feel free to use this in you own FHE)
We went down to Safeway (.25 miles) and asked for some of their throw away fruit (it's hard to pay for fruit you are just going to squish, kindof wasteful). Then we brought our oranges home (one for each child). We drew our faces on a piece of paper and taped them to our orange. Then I let the kids go put themselves out in the road (to represent playing in traffic :) then I got in the car and proceded to run them over. (they watched in horror as I destroyed their oranges) We then got to clean up the SQUISHED drippy mess off the road. After they stopped crying we had a talk about how much mom and dad would cry if one of my babies got squished on the road. We'll see if next time I say, "STOP! CAR! Do you want to get squished like an orange?" if they listen.
This is a funny side note. A Jaceyism as Christina might say. Jacey was placing her orange in the road and told Lucas "now watch out Lucas, you don't come back from being squished." This is something I have told her a number of times.

Might I suggest if you do this demonstration that you buy enough oranges to feed some to the kids afterwards, cause they were a little distraught when I didn't have any for them to eat.

We are speechless...what a demonstration...I don't think I want to go in traffic either. Chris however thought it was awesome and I see this demo coming up in our childrens lives too now.
How did you feel about driving over your children????? Just kidding!!
Wow- never thought of that before. When that becomes a problem, we will do this and see how well it works. Alexa does pretty good not going on the road right now. Lucky for me!!!
So cute! I love you! You are such a great mom. Your children are truly blessed! I love reading about your family and your adventures. You are in my prayers. Tell Justin hi for us and give the kiddos a big squeeze!
What a great idea!!! I love it!! :-) xoxoxo!
that is a very great visual for kids i'm gonna talk to Nate about doing this.
the family is darling as always!
I love it! I can just see them crying and being all upset. How could you do that to them? :o) ha ha... We're definitley going to have to keep that one in mind!
Hahahaha! Your kids are going to be scarred for life!! j/k. I had it all pictured out in my head-- from you driving the car over the oranges and the kids bawling their eyes out! Maybe I should do this with Brynlee. She just runs uncontrollably all over the place.
I cannot stop laughing!!!! What a great idea, I miss being around you and all the dumb stuff we used to do!
Well, Jenn, this is really funny because you WERE there, and it was because of YOU that we had this little demonstration! You were the most interested in what was going on everywhere else than where I was. It took two seconds for you to be out of the cart, or in the road, or in the middle of a rounder in K-Mart. You could slip my hand and be across an aisle in a heart-beat. I was willing to subject myself to the disapproving stares of strangers as I put you in a harness. (I told them you were my see-eye kid. They didn't think I was funny) Their tsk-tsks were better than losing you. Oh, there's one or two things I guess I don't miss about you not being my little lambikin anymore. But really, only a couple. :)
Mama Seversike has the best ideas. I guess your kids are more like you than you suspected. At least we know they will grow up to be awesome.
I love how you explain that you don't come back from being squished.
You have a good day! I have to throw my kids in the shower and then in the car for some shopping.
Later Gator.
classic!
